What is KNMC reciprocal registration?

Reciprocal registration is registration with the Kerala Nurses and Midwives Council (KNMC) for a nurse or midwife who is already registered with another state's nursing council: for example, a nurse from Kerala who studied in Karnataka and registered with the Karnataka State Nursing Council.

On knmc.org it is the Reciprocal Registration (Outside Kerala) route, next to Primary Registration (Kerala), with forms for BSc Nursing, GNM/ANM and additional qualifications. People also search for it as "KNC to KNMC", "DNC to KNMC" or "transfer of nursing registration to Kerala".

Who can apply

Nurses and midwives registered with a state nursing council outside Kerala: BSc Nursing, GNM, ANM or an additional qualification.

The INC suitability certificate: in February 2026 the Kerala High Court held that the state council cannot insist on an Indian Nursing Council suitability certificate for inter-state registration. In February 2025 the Karnataka High Court directed KNMC to register Karnataka BSc graduates without an INC certificate.

Your details

How the application works

On knmc.org, applicants read the General Instructions first and then apply online.

  1. Step 1: Apply online on knmc.org

    You

Choose Reciprocal Registration (Outside Kerala) and your course (BSc Nursing, GNM/ANM or an additional qualification), fill in the form and keep the application number.

  2. Step 2: Pay and send the application

    You

Pay the KNMC fee online and send the printed application with your documents (the list is below).

  3. Step 3: NOC from your current council

    Authority / Trueway

KNMC emails your current council asking for the No Objection Certificate (NOC), and you apply to that council for it directly. Karnataka is the exception: the two councils handle the NOC between them.

  4. Step 4: Surrender your old registration

    You

Once the NOC is issued, you surrender your original registration certificate to that council, then send KNMC a copy of the surrendered certificate with a request letter.

  5. Step 5: KNMC registration

    Authority

After its final verification, KNMC sends your original Kerala registration certificate by post, usually about 45 working days after you apply.

We prepare the application with you and keep you updated on WhatsApp.

By council

How the NOC works depends on the council you are registered with now.

We also handle reciprocal registration from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Haryana, West Bengal and the other state councils: ask us on WhatsApp.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does reciprocal registration mean?

Registration with KNMC for a nurse or midwife already registered with a nursing council outside Kerala. On knmc.org it is Reciprocal Registration (Outside Kerala).

Does KNMC need an INC suitability certificate for reciprocal registration?

In February 2026 the Kerala High Court held that the state council cannot insist on an INC suitability certificate for inter-state registration.

Can I keep my registration with the other state council?

No. Once the NOC is issued, you surrender your original certificate to the other council and send KNMC a copy with a request letter. KNMC then posts your Kerala registration certificate.

How long does KNMC reciprocal registration take?

About 45 working days in all. The NOC from your current council usually takes about 2 weeks of that.

I am registered with KNMC and need to register in another state. How does that work?

It works the other way round: your Kerala registration is surrendered, and KNMC sends the NOC to the other council, usually after about 2 weeks.

My registration with the other council has expired. Can I apply?

For Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, renewal is not mandatory before the NOC. Other councils have their own rules; the Haryana council's NOC letter, for example, says expired registrations are not accepted. We check the rule of your council before you apply.
