Good Standing for the UK: NMC Verification and GMC Certificate

What the NMC asks of your council

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registers nurses and midwives in the UK. If you trained in India, your council is asked twice:

1. Eligibility and qualification application. You upload your registration certificate (or a statement of entry to the register) and give the name of your council. The NMC then contacts the council to confirm your registration.

2. Registration application, after the test of competence. Your council gives a supporting declaration about your character. It comes from the council you are registered with now, or have been in the last three years; if you have not been registered in those three years, from the last one.

The NMC asks you to contact your council before you apply, so that it is ready to answer. Some councils charge a fee for this.

Doctors: the GMC certificate of good standing

  • Every country, last five years

    A certificate from every country where you were registered or licensed in the last five years.

  • Sent directly

    Wherever possible, your council sends it to the GMC directly.

  • Valid for three months

    It is valid for three months from the date it is issued, and must still be valid when your application is approved.

  • Plan the date

    Because of the three months, we time the request with your GMC application, not months before it.

Which council gives the NMC supporting declaration?

The council you are registered with now, or have been in the last three years. If you have not been registered in the three years before you apply, the NMC asks for your last council's details.

My registration certificate is in another language. What does the NMC need?

For every document not in English: a stamped and signed photocopy of the original, a complete English translation, and the translator's contact details.

How long is the GMC certificate of good standing valid?

Three months from the date it is issued. It must still be valid when the GMC approves your application.

I was registered in Kerala and then in Saudi Arabia. What does the GMC need?

A certificate from every country where you were registered or licensed in the last five years: here, from your Indian council and from the Saudi authority.
