Commercial document attestation

Commercial Document Attestation

Exporting, opening a branch or registering a company abroad? The documents of your business are attested first by a Chamber of Commerce, then by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), then by the embassy of the country. We check the documents, take them through each office and keep you updated on WhatsApp.

The route of a commercial document

Three offices in India, then the country where it asks.

  1. Chamber of Commerce

It attests the document of the company first.

  2. MEA

Attests on the signature of the Chamber of Commerce.

  3. Embassy

The embassy of the country in India.

  4. MOFA

Where the country asks for it.

Who needs it?

Businesses whose documents have to be accepted in another country.

  • Export

The MEA notes that Indian businesses need commercial documents attested for export.

  • A company or branch abroad

Registering a company, opening a branch or a bank account in another country.

  • Trading abroad

Certificates of incorporation, board resolutions and invoices for a business trading abroad.

How we handle it

Who does what, from your first message to the attested document.

  1. Step 1: Tell us the document and the country

    You

We confirm the offices, the fee and the expected time for your case before you send anything.

  2. Step 2: We collect your documents

    Trueway

The original document and a passport copy, at a branch or by courier. We check names, dates and seals before anything is submitted.

  3. Step 3: The Chamber of Commerce attests it

    Authority

A Chamber of Commerce attests the document of the company. Trueway does not control this step. We follow it and send you updates on WhatsApp.

  4. Step 4: The MEA attests it

    Authority

The Ministry of External Affairs attests the document on the signature of the Chamber of Commerce.

  5. Step 5: The embassy, or back to you

    Trueway

We take the document on to the embassy of the country in India, and to its MOFA step where the country asks for it. Then we return it to you at a branch or by courier.

Apostille or embassy for a commercial document

The Apostille Convention does not apply to administrative documents dealing directly with commercial or customs operations (its Article 1). So a commercial document may need MEA attestation and the embassy's stamp even for a country in the Convention.

MEA attestation, then the embassy

Ask us first

  • Apostille Convention countries

We check your document and the country, and confirm the route, before you start.

Documents required

From you
  • The original commercial document
  • The passport copy of the person who signs for the company

Good to know

  • Chamber of Commerce first

The MEA attests a commercial document on the signature of a Chamber of Commerce, as it does on the state's signature for a personal document.

  • The apostille has a limit

The Apostille Convention says it does not apply to administrative documents dealing directly with commercial or customs operations. Whether your document is one of them decides between the apostille and the embassy.

    Apostille attestation
  • The MEA confirms the signature

The MEA attests the signature of the office before it, not what the document says. It states that it does not take responsibility for the contents.
