What AHPRA asks for
AHPRA, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, registers nurses, midwives and other health practitioners on behalf of their national boards. If you are, or have been, registered outside Australia, AHPRA asks for a Certificate of Good Standing or a Certificate of Registration Status from the registration authority in every jurisdiction where you hold or have held registration.
For an Indian nurse, that is your state nursing council: KNMC in Kerala, TNNMC in Tamil Nadu, the Karnataka State Nursing Council and so on. The certificate confirms your registration and your standing with that council.
The application form for your profession tells you the period AHPRA needs a certificate for.
What AHPRA asks of the certificate
From AHPRA's information for international practitioners.
Sent directly by the council
The certificate goes from your council to AHPRA, at COGS@ahpra.gov.au. AHPRA takes it only from the council, not from you.
Dated within three months
It must be dated within three months of AHPRA receiving your application, so request it close to the time you apply.
Every council, every country
One from each authority you are or have been registered with: a second Indian state council, or a Gulf authority if you worked there.
No certificate? Tell AHPRA
If a council will not issue one, tell AHPRA. It may ask for other evidence of your current or previous registration.
Your council: documents and usual time
Each council asks for its own documents and takes its own time. Open your council for the list we work from.
Your council is not listed? Ask us on WhatsApp. All councils for Australia are on the AHPRA and ANMAC page.
How we handle your AHPRA good standing
Step 1: We look at your registrations
TruewayWhich councils and authorities you are or have been registered with, and so how many certificates AHPRA needs.
Step 2: We check your documents
TruewayYour council's list, the same name across your passport and council records, and an active registration.
Step 3: We plan the date
TruewayThe certificate must be dated within three months of AHPRA receiving your application, so we time the request with you.
Step 4: We apply and follow up
TruewayWe submit the request to your council, asking it to send the certificate directly to AHPRA, and follow it up until it is sent.
AHPRA and ANMAC: two different certificates
AHPRA registers you to work as a nurse in Australia. ANMAC assesses your skills for a skilled migration visa. Each asks for its own certificate from your council, sent directly to it. If you need both, we apply for both: see good standing for ANMAC.
For nurses, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia starts every internationally qualified nurse with a Self-check, which tells you the stages of your assessment. See the whole AHPRA process.

Got questions?
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I send the good standing certificate to AHPRA myself?
No. AHPRA says the certificate must come directly from the registration authority, your council, to its email address for certificates of good standing. We ask your council to send it there.
How recent must the certificate be?
AHPRA asks for a certificate dated within three months of your application being received. Request it close to the time you apply: a certificate older than that is not valid for your application.
I was registered in two Indian states. Do I need two certificates?
AHPRA asks for one from every authority you are, or have been, registered with. The application form for your profession says the period it needs a certificate for.
I work in the Gulf now. Does AHPRA need a certificate from there too?
If you are, or have been, registered there as a nurse, yes: AHPRA asks for a certificate from every jurisdiction where you hold or held registration, in addition to your Indian council.
How long does my Indian council take?
It depends on the council: from 10 working days in Tamil Nadu to about 30 in Andhra Pradesh in the cases we handle. Open your council above for its usual time.
What if my council does not issue the certificate?
AHPRA says to tell it. You may then need to give other evidence of your current or previous registration.
Is the AHPRA certificate the same as the ANMAC one?
No. AHPRA is for registration to work as a nurse, ANMAC for the skills assessment of a migration visa. Each needs its own certificate, sent directly to it by your council.
