Embassy of China
China Embassy Attestation
Taking an Indian document to mainland China for work, study, family or business? China joined the Apostille Convention in 2023, but India objected to its accession, and the Convention applies only between countries that have not objected. So an Indian apostille is not the route: your document is attested in India (the state, then the Ministry of External Affairs) and then legalised by the Chinese Embassy or a Chinese Consulate General in India. We collect your documents, take them through each office and return them to you.

What the Indian part of the attestation looks like
Before the Chinese Embassy or Consulate General, every document goes through the same Indian offices. This is a real certificate after them: the notary, the SDM and the MEA. The Chinese Embassy or Consulate General then adds its own attestation; a sample with its stamp is not shown here yet.

No apostille for mainland China
China joined the Apostille Convention on 7 November 2023, but India objected to its accession. The Convention applies only between countries that have not objected, so the MEA Apostille is not the route between India and China.
Notary, MEA, then the Embassy
The Chinese Embassy in India asks that a document issued in India is notarised, attested by the MEA, then legalised by the Embassy or a Consulate General. The MEA attests on the signature of the state, so we confirm the state step for your document.
Hong Kong and Macao
The Apostille Convention was already in force in Hong Kong and Macao before 2023. Their route is confirmed separately: ask us before you send anything.

Got questions?
Frequently Asked Questions
Clear answers about China attestation.
Can I get an apostille for China instead of embassy attestation?
Not for mainland China. India objected to China's accession to the Apostille Convention, and the Convention applies only between countries that have not objected. Your document takes MEA attestation and then legalisation by the Chinese Embassy or a Consulate General.
What are the steps for a degree certificate?
First the state attestation: the HRD of the state that issued the certificate, or a notary and the SDM. Then the MEA attestation, and then legalisation by the Chinese Embassy or a Chinese Consulate General in India.
Where are documents submitted for Chinese legalisation?
The Chinese Consulate General in Mumbai takes legalisation applications through the Chinese Visa Application Service Centers (CVASC). We tell you where your document goes when you enquire.
Can commercial documents be legalised for China?
Yes. The Chinese Embassy notes that some commercial documents are attested by a Chamber of Commerce and Industry first. Then the MEA attests them, and the Embassy or a Consulate General legalises them.
Is the route the same for Hong Kong and Macao?
Not necessarily. The Apostille Convention was already in force in Hong Kong and Macao before China joined it, so their route is confirmed separately. Ask us for the route of your document.
Which documents do I need for China attestation?
The original certificate or document and a copy of your passport. For a marriage certificate we need the passport copies of husband and wife, and for a minor's birth certificate the passport copies of the parents.
Is the attestation done on the original document?
Yes. The stamps are placed on the original document, so the original has to be submitted.
How long does China attestation take?
It depends on the document and the state that issued it. We tell you the expected time for your case before you start, and send updates on WhatsApp at each step.
What does China attestation cost?
Connect with the Trueway team on WhatsApp. The fee depends on the document and the route, and we confirm it before you decide.
Is Trueway part of the Embassy of China or the Ministry of External Affairs?
No. Trueway provides independent documentation support and is not affiliated with any council, embassy or government authority. Each stamp is given by the office itself, not by Trueway.
Attestation for other countries
