Nurses registered with the Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council (TNNMC) renew their registration every five years, online. This guide covers renewal and the licensure card, a lost or wrong card, moving to another state, and verification for abroad.
For the council services we handle, see our Tamil Nadu Nursing Council page.
Renewal every five years
TNNMC says registered nurses renew once every five years, and renewal has been compulsory since July 2013. If your licence has expired, you renew it on the council's renewal portal.
How to renew online
Start renewal
On TNNMC's renewal portal, with your registration number (RN and RM) and your course category.
Details and documents
Fill in your details and upload the documents (see below).
Pay online
By credit card, debit card or net banking.
Track and print
Check the renewal status on the portal, then print your renewal certificate and licensure card.
Documents for renewal
- Your registration number (RN and RM) and course category (NM, GNM, ANM, HV, RN, RM).
- Your nursing certificate.
- The appointment order from your current employer, if you are working.
- A recent passport-size photo.
- Your employment details, address, community, religion and nationality.
TNNMC also lists CNE online and a check of your CNE hours. Ask us whether your renewal needs them.
Lost or wrong renewal card
- Lost: apply to the council with a First Information Report (FIR). The duplicate renewal certificate and licensure card come by post.
- A mistake on the card: apply for a correction of the name, date of birth or address.
- A lost registration certificate: a duplicate can be applied for one year after the loss.
- Name change after marriage: a separate application to change the name in the register.
Moving to another state: NOC and secondary registration
Registering the same qualification in another state is what TNNMC calls secondary registration. For a nurse coming to Tamil Nadu, TNNMC asks that the parent registration certificate is surrendered at the parent council and that a No Objection Certificate (NOC) is obtained from that council. Every nurse working in Tamil Nadu has to be registered with TNNMC.
Leaving Tamil Nadu for another state? The NOC comes from TNNMC, as your parent council; the other state's council tells you its own steps.
Verification for abroad
TNNMC handles foreign verification through the MEA's e-SANAD portal, in two steps: the council's fee and receipt, then the upload on e-SANAD. Only nurses with an active Tamil Nadu registration are eligible, so renew first if yours has expired.
Going to the UK, Ireland or Australia? See our verification pages for the UK NMC, NMBI and AHPRA.
The council's office is at Jayaprakash Narayanan Maligai, Santhome High Road, Mylapore, Chennai 600 004 (mail: info@tamilnadunursingcouncil.com).
